Salaat - Prayers
Madinat-al-'ilmi
Basic Prayers in Islam BISMILA-HIR RAHMA-NIR RAHIM In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. Before a person can say his prayer, he must be clean and pure. The Qur'an says: "Truly Allah loves those who turn to Him and those who care for cleanliness". Cleanliness of mind, of body, and of clothes is called Taharah or purification. It is only in such a condition of purification that a Muslim may perform the Salah. Purification of the body is attained by partial or total washing with clean water. The partial wash is known as Al-Wudu or the ablution, and the total wash is called Al-Ghusl or the washing (bath) of the whole body. Ash-hadu An La Ilaha Illallahu Wa Ash-hadu Anna Muhammadan 'Abduhu Wa Rasuluh Al-Wudu The process of performing Wudu is as follows: Mention the name of Allah by saying "Bismilla-Hir-Rahma-Nir-Rah'im" (in the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful). (faraa-id obligatory) Wash both hands up to the wrists together three times, ensuring that every part including between the fingers is wetted by water as shown in figures 1, (a) and (b). Taking a handful of water into the mouth, rinse the mouth three times as shown in figure 2. (Sunna traditional) Snuff water contained in the right palm into the nose and then eject the water with the left hand (three times) - as shown in figures 3 and 4. Wash the face, ear to ear, forehead to chin, three times as shown in figures 5, 6 and 7. (faraa-id obligatory) Wash the right arm thoroughly from the wrist to the elbow three times. Repeat the same with the left hand - as shown in figures 8 and 9. Run moistened hands over the head from forehead to the back and back to forehead (three times) - as in figures 10, 11 and 12. (faraa-id obligatory) Run moistened fingers through the ears, the first finger of each hand going across the inside of the corresponding ear, while the thumb runs across the outside (three times) - as shown in figure 13. (Sunna traditional) Wash both feet up to the ankles starting from the right and ensuring that all parts particularly between the toes are wetted - as shown in figure 14. If you had performed complete "Wudu" before putting on your socks or stockings, it is not necessary to remove them when you want to repeat the performance of "Wudu". It is enough to wipe over the stockinged feet with wet hands. This may be done for a period of one day, (and three days on journey) on the condition that the socks or stockings are never removed. If they are removed, it is necessary to re-wash the feet for Wudu. (faraa-id obligatory) The process ends with the recitation of the Kalimatus-Shahadah ASH-HADU ALLA ILAHA ILLALLAHU WA-ASH-HADU AN-NA MUHAMMADAN 'ABDUHU-WA-RASULUH I bear witness to the fact that there is no deity but Allah. I bear witness taht Muhammad is His slave and messenger Reparation of mistakes If you forget to wash any part before completing the Wudu then you have to restart from that part. If you remember after completion of Wudu then you just have to wash that particular part. Quraan : You should always make sure that you have Wudu before reciting or touching the Holy Quraan. A fresh performance of Wudu is necessary if one breaks wind, touches genitals, or becomes sexually excited, or pays a visit to the lavatory, or falls into sleep lying down, or vomits violently, or incurs a flow of blood from an injury, or a flow of impure fluid. AL-GHUSL (THE WASHING OR BATH) JANAABA The greater purification, Ghusl, is obligatory when one is defiled as a result of nocturnal emission (or a wet dream), marital intercourse, child birth, or when entering into the fold of Islam. The process of performing Ghusl is as follows: Mention the name of Allah by saying "Bismilla-Hir-Rahma-Nir-Rah'im" (in the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful). (faraa-id obligatory) 1. Start by washing your private areas: Front and back with water to remove any impurities from the belly button to the knees. 2. Then repeat the same procedure as with the Wudu but wash every part only Once leaving the feet. 3. Then wash your whole head to the neck 4. Then the right part of your body from the shoulder to the belly button 5. Then the left part of your body from the shoulder to the belly button 6. Then wash your feet 7. The process ends with the recitation of the Kalimatus-Shahadah ASH-HADU ALLA ILAHA ILLALLAHU WA-ASH-HADU AN-NA MUHAMMADAN 'ABDUHU-WA-RASULUH I bear witness to the fact that there is no deity but Allah. I bear witness taht Muhammad is His slave and messenger As for what is related to Ghusl, which is washing the entire body with water, then the basic rule with regard to it is Allaahs saying: And if you are in a state of sexual impurity (Janaabah), then purify yourselves (i.e. wash your entire bodies). [Surah Al-Maaidah: 6] And Allaahs saying: O you who believe. Do not come near the prayer while you are in a drunken state, until you know what you are uttering (i.e. when you are not drunk), nor when you are in a state of sexual impurity (janaabah) unless you are traveling on the road until you make Ghusl (i.e. wash your entire body). [Surah An-Nisaa: 43] Ghusl is divided into that which is Waajib (obligatory) and that which is Mustahabb (recommended). As for the obligatory Ghusl, then it is to be done after sexual intercourse, regardless of whether one ejaculated or not. A male is obligated to perform ghusl if just the head of his private organ enters (the female private organ), even if it is for one second. This is based on the hadeeth of Abu Hurairah (radyAllaahu anhu) who said: Allaahs Messenger (sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: When a man sits in between the four parts of a woman and enters into her (for intercourse), the ghusl becomes obligatory. Reported by Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim. In Muslims report, there is the addition: even if he doesnt ejaculate. The women falls under the same ruling as the man in this regard. Ghusl is also obligatory if an individual has any seminal fluid descend and can find traces of it on him/her. This is based on the hadeeth of Umm Salamah, who reported that Umm Sulaim, the wife of Abu Talha, asked Allaahs Messenger (sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam), saying: Allaah is not shy when it comes to the truth. So is it obligatory for a woman to perform ghusl if she has a wet dream (i.e. seminal fluid comes out)? The Prophet (sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) responded: Yes, if she sees the fluid. This hadeeth is reported by Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim. A woman has to perform Ghusl, after the menstruation period. A woman has to perform ghusl, at the end of postnatal blood. When a disbeliever embraces Islam, he has to perform ghusl after uttering the testimony - kalimah. When a Muslim dies, Ghusl is required for him/her. The two things which cause "Janabat" and after which Ghusl is Wajib are: Discharge of Semen in sleep or while awake. Sexual Intercourse. The following things are Haram while in condition of Janabat Reciting even a single ayat from those Suras in which Sajda is wajib. (Surah as-Sajdah, 32:15; Surah Ham Mim Sajdah, 41:38; Surah an-Najm, 53:62; Surah al-`Alaq, 96:19. Touching the writings of Quran or the Names of Allah. Entering Masjidul Haram or Masjidun Nabi. To stay in Masjids, other than the ones mentioned in C. To go and place something in the Masjid or, to enter it to take out something. Some of the things which are Makruh in state of Janabat. To eat To drink To touch the Quran To recite more than seven verses of Quran in which an obligatory Sajdah does not occur. To carry the Quran from one place to other, even without touching it. To apply oil to ones body To sleep. It is okay to sleep after performing Tayammum instead of Ghusl on account of non- availability of Water To dye ones hair with Henna etc. To have sexual intercourse after the discharge of semen during sleep. Impurities: Excrement of People. His urine. Shed blood. Blood shed under any circumstances. Dogs saliva. The urine & stool of animals those are not permissible to eat. Pig. TAYAMMUM (DRY ABLUTION) On certain occasions, it may become either impossible (eg. when water cannot be found or just enough for drinking is available), or it is dangerous, because of illness, to use water for Wudu or Ghusl. In such situations, Tayammum (dry ablution) is perform ed. The procedure: Begin with the name of Allah. Strike both palms on sand, or anything containing sand or dust, like a wall or a stone etc. Pass the palms of the hands over the face once. Strike the sand etc., again with the palms. Rub the right hand with the left palm from the wrist to the elbow and similarly for the left hand with the right palm. Finish with the Kalimatus-Shahadah as for Wudu. How to do Tayammum. Niyyat: I am doing tayammum in place of Wudhu or Ghusl, so that my prayer or fast may be correct, Wajib or Sunnat Qurbatan ilallah. Strike palms of both hands together upon things on which tayammum is correct. Just putting the hands upon earth etc. is not enough. (Fig 1.) Pull both palms together from the beginning of the forehead down to the point of the nose. Both sides of the forehead joining the ears should be included. (Fig 2a & 2b) Then pull the left palm upon the back of the right hand from the projecting small bone on the joint of palm and arm up to the fingertips. Then pull the right palm on the back of the left palm likewise. Strike the palms together upon earth etc. second time. Pull the left palm on the back of the right hand, as explained above. Pull the right palm on the back of the left hand, as explained above. Fig 1. Fig 2a. ig 2b Fig 3. While performing tayammum one should remove the ring he or she is wearing and also remove any obstruction, which may be present on his forehead or on the palms or back of his hands. In case a person has a wound on his forehead or the back of his hands and it is bandaged with a cloth or something else, which cannot be removed, he should wipe his hands on it. And in the case that he has a bandage on his hands, which cannot be removed then, he should strike his hands along with the bandage. A person whose obligation is tayammum cannot perform it unless the time for prayers sets in, however if there is a probability that his excuse will cease to exist before the time for prayers is over it is better that he should not offer the prayers during the earlier part of the time. If a person performs tayammum on account of non - availability of water or because of some other excuse his tayammum becomes void when that obstacle ceases to exist. If some Ghusls are to be performed by a person but he cannot do the Ghusl it is okay to perform one tayammum, but it is recommended to do that for everyone of those Ghusls he should perform one tayammum. If a person performs tayammum in lieu of Ghusl - e Janabat he can do his prayers, however if he performs tayammum in lieu of other Ghusl then he should do another tayammum in lieu of Wudhu. . I bear witness taht Muhammad is His slave and messenger Diagrams showing Timings of Daily Prayers THE CONDUCT OF SALAH In this section, some guidelines for the correct performance of Salah are given. The most important pre-requisite, Wudu (ablution), is explained in the last chapter. Other important conditions is: 1. TIME Each of the Salah must be offered at or during its proper time. No Salah can be said before its time. There are five obligatory prayers in a day. Fajr - the morning prayer. Zuhr - the early afternoon prayer. 'Asr - the late afternoon prayer. Maghrib - the sun-set prayer. 'Isha - the night prayer. 2.DRESS: Before offering your Salah make sure that you are properly dressed. For men and boys, the dress should be such that it covers their bodies from the navel to the knees at least. Women are required to cover themselves from head to foot, leaving only the face and hands uncovered. The dress for Salah must be clean and free from all filth. During the monthly period women are free from obligation of Salah. 3.PLACE: Wherever a man might be, he can turn towards Allah in Salah and in devotion. The prophet has said, "The (whole of the) earth has been rendered for me a mosque: pure and clean". Preferably Salah is to be offered in jama'at (congregation). Whenever possible, one should pray facing the Ka'bah, Makkah. FARD OR NAFILAH Salah is composed of the Fard (obligatory) and the Nafilah (superogatory) prayers. The Fard Salah are five in a day. Failure to perform any one of them is a blameable sin. The Nafilah includes the Sunnah, which the Prophet (S.A.W.) used to perform regularly before or after each Fard Salah PRAYERS IN SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES When in circumstances where it is not possible to pray, or when on journey, you are permitted to shorten Salah. Such a shortened prayer is known as Salatul-Qasr. When travelling one may offer two raka'ats in place of four raka'ats in Zuhr, Asr and 'Isha, but there is no change in the two raka'ats of Fajr and three raka'ats of Maghrib Salah. Besides this concession in Fard Salah, one may leave all the additional Sunnah except the two Sunnah raka'ats of Fajr and the Witr of 'Isha prayer. But a section of Muslims do perform Sunnah even when on a journey. In case the stay at any one place during the journey exceeds a fortnight, complete the Salah, with all the Fard and Sunnah raka'ats must be offered. If you are sick, you may offer your Salah in a sitting position or Iying in bed, by making signs in place of the physical movements. In journey, in sickness and in other emergencies, one is allowed to offer two separate Salah jointly. Thus Zuhr and 'Asr can be said together in the last part of the period of Zuhr, Maghrib and 'Isha may also be offered similarly towards the end of Maghrib time (when it is almost dark). THE CALL TO PRAYER ADHAN To assemble the Muslims for congregational prayer, "Adhan", or the call to prayer is given. The caller (Mu'adh-dhin) stands facing Ka'bah (Qiblah), and raising his hands to his ears calls in a loud voice: ALLAHU AKBAR ALLAHU AKBAR Allah is the greatest. Allah is the greatest. ALLAHU AKBAR ALLAHU AKBAR Allah is the greatest. Allah is the greatest. ASH-HADU AL-LA ILAHA ILLALLAHASH-HADU AL-LA ILAHA ILLALLAH I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah ASH-HADU AN-NA MUHAMMADAR-RASULULAH I bear witness that Muhammed (S.A.W.) is the Messenger of Allah ASH-HADU AN-NA MUHAMMADAR-RASULULAH I bear witness that Muhammed (S.A.W.) is the Messenger of Allah HAYYA 'ALAS SALAHHAYYA 'ALAS SALAH Come to prayer. Laa ilaaha ila laah There is no deity besides Allaah THE CONTENTS OF SALAH Salah in Islam is a unique institution. It brings man closer to Allah by harmonising his mental attitude with physical posture. In Salah, a Muslim submits himself completely to his Creator. When you are sure that you have fulfilled all the necessary conditions for Salah, you ready to offer Salah. A detailed account of how to say Salah is given below: DU'A AFTER ADHAN On completion of the Adhan, Muslims are recommended to recite ALLAHUMMA RABBA HADHI-HID-DA'WA-TIT-TAMMAH O Allah! Lord of this complete call and prayer of ours, by the blessing of it. WAS-SALATIL QAAE-MATI MUHAMMADANIL-WASILATA give to Muhammed his eternal riqhts of intercession, WAL FADI-LAT WAD-DARAJATAR RAFI-A distinction and highest class (in paradise). WAB 'ATH-HU MAQAMAM-MAHMUDA-NI LATHI WA `ADTAK And raise him to the promised rank You have promised him. WAR-ZUQ-NA SHA FA 'ATAHU YAUM-AL-QIYAMAH and bestow his Intercession on us on the day of judgement. IN-NAKA LA-TUKHULIFUL-MI`AD urely You never go back on your word. Rectification of the Imam If the imam makes a mistake in salat it is possible to correct him... the way to do it is to say "subhanallah" so that you attract his attention and make him aware of the mistake. Recite the ayat that he miised. And "Allahu akbar" if he should have been standing. Sami allahu liman hamida ruku . Subhaana rabbiyal alaa if he missed a sujud Tahiyyatu lil-laahi if this is what he missed. IQAMAH When the iqaamah is called, you should not engage yourself in anything other than putting your all focus and thoughts on Allah, death, Yawmal Hiyaamah the day of judgement, Siraat the crossing towards the day of judgement. When performing your prayers: You can only stop performing your prayers if a little child in grave danger our something of the sort. IQAMAH After Adhan when the Muslims are assembled at the place of worship, a second call (Iqamah) is recited by one of the group. This signals the start of the congregational Salah. It is similar to Adhan except that it is recited faster but in a lower tone. ALLAHU AKBAR ALLAHU AKBAR Allah is the greatest. Allah is the greatest. Note: You shouldn't say the intention by mouth cause it is Innovation make it in your heart Be careful: When you start to pray don't look at the sky because it is forbidden as the Prophet peace be upon him said :" People must refrain from looking up at the sky in prayer, or their sight will not return to them (and in one narration: or their sight will be plucked away). Start the prayers Allahu Akbar Allah is the greatest Notes : 1-You should raise your hands with the takbeer. 2- Then you should place your right arm on you left arm and place it over our chest. 3- You should place the right arm on the back of your left palm, wrist and forearm 4- Then you should incline your head during prayer and fix your sight towards the ground .... as the Prophet peace be upon him do.... 5- Be careful: When you start to pray don't look at the sky because it is forbidden as the Prophet peace be upon him said :" People must refrain from looking up at the sky in prayer, or their sight will not return to them (and in one narration: or their sight will be plucked away) Now placing your right hand on the left, just below, above or on the navel (as shown in figure 18 - and ladies placing their hands on their chest as shown in figure 17b) Recite the following: SUBHANA-KALLAH-HUMMA WA BI-HAMDIKA llah, Glorified, praise worthy WATABARAKAS-MUKA WATA`ALA JADDUKA and blessed is They Name and exalted Thy Majesty WA-LA ILAHA GHAIRUKA nd there is no deity worthy of worship except Thee. Note: 1- The Prophet peace be upon him said : " No prayer is acceptable without the recitation of Fathiha " 2- In Zuhr and Asr you have to recite it quitly as Jaabir said : We used to recite behind the imaam in Zuhr and 'Asr: soorah al-Faatihah and another soorah in the first two rak'ahs, and soorah al-Fatihah in the last two." 3- If you are praying in Jama'a then you should raise your voice when you are saying "Ameen " 4- Be careful:"The Prophet peace be upon him finished a prayer in which he was reciting loudly (in one narration: it was the dawn prayer) and said: Were any of you reciting with me just now?! A man said: "Yes, I was, O Messenger of Allaah". He said: I say, why am I contended with? "... This thing mean don't recite when the Imam is reciting. Take refuge from Satan A`U-THU-BIL-LA-HI MINASHAITANIR RAJEEM I seek refuge in Allah from the rejevted saytaan After this recite the opening Surah , Al-Fatihaha : BISMILAHIR RAHMANIR RAHIM In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. ALHAMDU LIL-LAHI RAB-BIL `ALAMIN Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. AR-RAHMAN-NIR RAHIM the Beneficent, ther Merciful MALIKI YAW-MID-DIN Master of the Day of Judgement IYYA-KA N`ABUDU WA-IYYAKA NASTA`IN Thee alone we worship and to Thee alone we turn for help IHDI-NAD-SIRA TAL MUSTAQIM Guide us in the straight path. Note: Suuratul Fatiha should be recited in every takbeer in the standing position. Now recite the following or any other passage from the Holy Qur`an: BISMILA-HIR RAHMA-NIR RAHIM In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, ther Merciful QUL HU-WAL-LAHO AHAD Say: Allah is one and the only God ALLA-HUS-SA-MAD Allah, upon whom all depend LAM YALID WALAM YULAD He begots not, nor is He begotten, WALAM YAKUL-LAHU KUFU-WAN AHAD and there is nothing which can be compared to Him Now bow down saying:You should raise your hands with the takbeer. ALLAHU AKBAR Allah is the Greatest Place your hands on your knees and in this inclined position (Ruku` as shown in figure 19) recite these words thrice: SUBHANA RAB-BI-YAL ATHIM Glory to my Lord the great S UBHANA RAB-BI-YAL ATHIM Glory to my Lord the great SUBHANA RAB-BI-YAL ATHIM Glory to my Lord the great Posture for ladies in Ruku` is slighty different to that of a man The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) would recite another soorah after al-Faatihah, making it long sometimes, and on other occasions making it short because of travel, cough, illness or the crying of infants. The Prophet said : Verily, I have indeed been forbidden from reciting the Qur'aan in rukoo' or sujood. In the rukoo', therefore, glorify the Supremity of the Lord, Mighty and Sublime, in it; as for the sujood, exert yourselves in supplication in it, for it is most likely that you will be answered ...so it is forbidden to read Quran in Rukoo' or Sujood Then come to the standing position (figure 21 & 22) saying: SAMI `ALLAHU LIMAN HAMIDAH Allah has heard all who praise Him. RAB-BANA LAKAL HAMD Our Lord: Praise be to Thee -Straightening up from Rukoo': The prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) would straighten up his back out of rukoo', Now saying "Allahu Akbar" prostrate on the ground with your forehead, the knees the nose and palms of both hands touching the ground. In this position ajdah - as in figure 23, 24 & 25) repeat these words three times at least: SUBHANA RAB-BI-YAL A`ALA Glory to my Lord the most high SUBHANA RAB-BI-YAL A`ALA Glory to my Lord the most high SUBHANA RAB-BI-YAL A'ALA Glory to my Lord the most high. Your nose & forehead in with carpet Sit upright with knees still on the ground after a moments rest perform the second Sajdah saying: ALLAHU AKBAR Allah is the Greatest Then you will sit in a specific position Then recite: Rabb ighfirlee wa irhamnii (once) O my Lord! Forgive me, and have mercy on me In the second Sajdah is the same: ALLAHU AKBAR Allah is the Greatest Then recite the following words three times: SUBHANA RAB-BI-YAL A'ALA Glory to my Lord the most high. Note : You should say Subhana Rabbi yal a'la three times on each Sujud . 2- The right postion of Sujud: a)You would support yourself on your palms [and spread them] b)put your fingers together c)point them towards the qiblah d)Make your nose touch the ground cause the prophet said : There is no prayer for the one whose nose does not feel as much of the ground as the forehead e)Put your knees and toes down firmly and point with the front of the toes towards the qiblah and put your heels together and keep your feet upright. f)These are the seven limbs on which he (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) would prostrate: the palms, the knees, the feet, and the forehead and nose. This completes one raka'at of Salah. The second raka'at is said in the same way. But after the second Sajdah you sit back, with the left foot bent towards the right, which should be placed vertical to the mat with the toes touching the mat. The palms should be lifted from the mat and placed on the knees. In this position (Q'adahas silently say these words (Tashahhud): AT-TAHI-YATU LIL-LAHI WAS-SALAWATU WAT-TAY-YIBATU All prayers and worship through words, action and sanctity are for Allah only. AS-SALAMU `ALAIKA AY-YUHAN-NABIY-YU Peace be on you, O Prophet WARAHMATUL-LAHI WABARAKATUH and Mercy of Allah and His blessings. AS-SALAMU `ALAINA WA`ALA `IBADIL-LAHIS-SALIHIN Peace be on us and on those who are righteous servants of Allah ASH-HADU AL-LA ILAHA IL-LAL-LAHU I bear witness to the fact that there is no deity but Allah. WA-ASH-HADU AN-NA MUHAMMADAN `ABDUHU WARASULUH I bear witness taht Muhammad is His slave and messenger Then turn your face to the left (as in figure 31) and repeat the above words (aloud). AS-SALAMU 'ALAIKUM WA-RAHMATUL-LAH Peace be on you and Allah's blessings AS-SALAMU 'ALAIKUM WA-RAHMATUL-LAH Peace be on you and Allah's blessings Another alternative is Salaatul Ibrahim AL-LAHUM-MA SAL-LI`ALA MUHAMMAD-IN WA `ALA ALI MUHAMMADIN O Allah, exalt Muhammad and the followers of Muhammad KAMAA SALAITA `ALA IBRAHIMA WA`ALA ALI IBRAHIMA As Though did exalt Ibrahim and his followers. IN-NAKA HAMIDUM MAJEED Thou art the praised, the Glorious AL-LAHUM-MA BARIK MUHAMMAD-IN WA 'ALA ALI MUHAMMADIN O Allah, exalt Muhammad and his followers KAMABARAKTA 'ALA IBRAHIMA WA 'ALA ALI IBRAHIMA As Thou has blest Ibrahim and his followers. IN-NAKA HAMIDUM-MAJEED Thou art the Praised, the Glorious Then say silently: RAB-BIJ-'ALNI MUQIMAS-SALATI WAMIN DHUR-RIY-YATI O Lord! Make me and my children steadfast in Prayer; RAB-BANA WATAQAB-BAL DU'A' RAB-BIGH FIRLI Lord! Accept the prayer. Our Lord! forgive me WA LIWALIDAY-YA WALIL-MU'MININA YAUMA YAQUM-UL HISAB and my parents and believers on the Day of Judgment. Remembrance of the Lord Allaah after the prayers Then the prophet used to recite: Astahfiru la 33 times Allaah forgive me my sins Subhana la 33 times How perfect Allaah is... Alhamdu lila 33 times All praise is for Allaah Ashadu anlaa ilaaha ilalaah wahdahuu laa zarika lahuu I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Allaah Wa ashadu anna muhammadan abduhuu wa rassuuluhuu And I bear witness that Muhammad is Allahs slave messenger (Once) SALAT-UL-WITR The three raka'at prayers said after the Fard and Sunnah of the 'Isha is called Salat-ul-Witr. It is strongly recommended in the practice of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) and is Wajib (necessary) according to one section of Muslims. Others regard it a mere Sunnah Salah. The first two raka'at of this Salat-ul-Witr are said like the first two raka'at of the Maghrib prayers. In the third raka'at after Al-Fatihah, recite some additional Surah or verses of the Qursan. This prayer is in a set of two.Two rakats in the first set. These surahs are commonly recomentded in Salat-ul-Witr: In the first rakat after surat Al Fatiha BISMILAHIR RAHMANIR RAHIM In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. ALHAMDU LIL-LAHI RAB-BIL `ALAMIN raise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. AR-RAHMAN-NIR RAHIM The Beneficient and the Merciful MALIKI YAW-MID-DIN Master of the Day of Judgement IYYA-KA N`ABUDU WA-IYYAKA NASTA`IN Thee alone we worship and to Thee alone we turn for help IHDI-NAD-SIRA TAL MUSTAQIM Guide of to the straight path SIRA TAL-LATHINA AN-`AMTA `ALIAHIM The path of those whom you favoured GHAIRIL MAGHDUBI `ALAINHIM and who did not deserve Thy anger Suuratul al alaa [87:1] Glorify the name of thy Guardian-Lord Most High, [87:2] Who hath created, and further, given order and proportion; [87:3] Who hath ordained laws. And granted guidance; [87:4] And Who bringeth out the (green and luscious) pasture, [87:5] And then doth make it (but) swarthy stubble. [87:6] By degrees shall We teach thee to declare (the Message), so thou shalt not forget, [87:7] Except as Allah wills: For He knoweth what is manifest and what is hidden. [87:8] And We will make it easy for thee (to follow) the simple (Path). [87:9] Therefore give admonition in case the admonition profits (the hearer). [87:10] The admonition will be received by those who fear (Allah): [87:11] But it will be avoided by those most unfortunate ones, [87:12] Who will enter the Great Fire, [87:13] In which they will then neither die nor live. [87:14] But those will prosper who purify themselves, }87:15] And glorify the name of their Guardian-Lord, and (lift their hearts) in prayer. [87:16] Day (behold), ye prefer the life of this world; [87:17] But the Hereafter is better and more enduring. We seek your help and your pardon WANASTAGHFIRUKA and ask Thy forgiveness, WANU'MINU BIKA WANATAWAK-KALU 'ALAIKA and believe in Thee and trust in Thee, WANUTHNI 'ALAIKAL-KHAIRA WA NASHKURUKA and we praise Thee in the best manner and we thank Thee WALANAKFURUKA WANAKHLA'U WANATRUKU and we are not unqrateful and we cast off and forsake him MAY-YAF JURUK ALLAHUM-MA IY-YAKA N'ABUDU also disobeys Thee. O Allah, Thee alone do we worship WALAKA NUSAI -LI WA-NASJUDU WA-ILAIKA NAS'A and to Thee we pray, and beforo Thee do we prostrate, to Thee do we turn to WANAHFIDU WANARJU RAHMATAKA WANAKHSHA ADHABAKA in haste, and hope for Thy mercy, and we fear Thy punishment. IN-NA 'ADHABAKA BIL KUF-FARI MULHIQ Thy punishment surely overtakes the unbelievers. Repair of mistake in Salat: If you make a mistake during salat, you can correct it by doing the following... during the last rukuh, when you are sitting down, after you read "attahiyathu lillahi..." say "as-salamu 'alaykum" over your right shoulder and go back into the sajda, then after u sit back up, go into sajda again, and after u come back into the sitting position, say "attahiyathu lillahi..." then the rest of the surah's that you recite and complete ur salat normal, that will make up the mistake that you did during the salat. In a three raka`at (i.e. Maghrib) or four raka`at (like Zuhr, `Asr and `Isha) Salah you stand up for the remaining raka`at after Tashahhud. On the other had if it is a two raka`at (Fajr) Salah, keep sitting and after this recite Darud (blessing for the Prophet). Do not pray towards the graves, and do not sit on them. That is a devil called Khinzab, so when you detect him, seek refuge with Allaah from him, and spit lightly19 on your left three times. 1. If a Fard part of the prayer is ignored or missed either intentionally or unintentionally, or a Wajib part is missed intentionally, the prayer will be rendered void and no sajdah will set it right and thus it will have to be offered afresh. 2. Two sajdahs of sajdah have to be performed only once in the final sitting position for any number of Wajib articles missed forgetfully during the prayer. 3. If a person recites Tashahhud forgetfully before al Fatiha during the standing position, he need not perform sajdah. For the glorification of Allah is allowed before al Faiha and Tashahhud contains a glorification of Allah. If however, Tashahhud is recited after the additional surah in the first rak'ah or before or after the additional surah, in the second rak'ah, sajdah sahv will have to be performed. 4. Forgetting to stand in Qaumah (after ruku), or to sit in Jalsah (between two sajdahs), entails sajdah. 5. If a person forgets to observe the first sitting (Qa'dah) and stands up fully, he should not resume the sitting position upon remembering the mistake, but should complete the prayer and perform sajdah in the final sitting position. If however, he realizes his mistake before standing up fully, he should sit down and need not perform sajdah. 6. If a person forgets to observe the final sitting position in a Fard prayer containing two or four rak'ahs and stands up, he should sit down if he realizes the mistake before performing the sajdah and carry out sajdah sahv to complete the prayer as usual. If, however, he realizes his mistake after performing the sajdah, he should not sit, but should instead offer another rak'ah to complete four or six rak'ahs and need not perform sajdah. For this prayer will be regarded as Nafl, and the Fard prayer will have to be offered afresh. If this happens in the Maghrib prayer, he should add the fourth rak'ah and then observe the final sitting, for according to a Tradition, the Nafl prayer consists of pairs of rak'ahs. 7. If a person forgets to recite al Fateha, or the Qunut, or Tashahhud, or the additional takbirs in the Eid prayers, sajdah becomes necessary. 8. If the Imam recites the Qur'an inaudibly in the Maghrib, Isha and Fajr prayers by mistake, or inaudibly in the Zuhr and Isha prayers by mistake, he has to perform sajdah. 9. If the Imam omits or ignores an essential article (Wajib) of the prayer, the follower also has to perform sajdah with the Imam, however, if the follower omits at essential article, neither of them has to perform sajdah. 10. If a person omits to recite an additional surah after al Fatiha, or recites an additional surah before al Fatiha, he should recite another surah (after al Fatiha) and must perform sajdah in the final sitting position. 11. If a person omits to recite an additional surah in one or both of the first rak'ahs of the Fard prayer, he may recite an additional surah in one or both of the last rak'ahs as the case may be, and perform sajdah at the end. 12. If a person omits to recite an additional surah in any rak'ah of the Sunnat or Nafl prayer, he must perform sajdah. 13. If in the final sitting of a Fard prayer of four rak'ahs, a person has completed Tashahhud and then has a doubt that this is the first sitting, he should stand up for the fifth rak'ah. Now if before performing the sajdah, he realizes his mistake, he should resume the sitting position and complete his prayer with sajdah sahv. But if he has performed the sajdah of the fifth rak'ah, he should add the sixth rak'ah as well, and complete the prayer with sajdah sahv. The first four rak'ahs will be regarded as the Fard prayer and the last two as Nafl. 14. If the Imam or an individual omits to recite al Fatiha, in one or both of the last two rak'ahs of a Fard prayer of four rak'ahs, he need not carry out sajdah sahv, but if he omits to recite al Fatiha in any of the Sunnat or Nafl rak'ahs, he will have to perform sajdah sahv because it is essential to recite al Fatiha in the first two rak'ahs of a Fard prayer but in all the rak'ahs of the Sunnat and Nafl prayers. 15. If a person carries out two rukus or three sajdahs, in the same rak'ah or recites al Fatiha twice, he will have to perform sajdah. 16. If a person begins to recite Salat afterTashahhud in the first sitting, and has recited as much as: Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadan or has sat quiet for so long, he will have to carry out sajdah. 17. If a Masbuq (a follower who has joined late) commits a mistake while he is completing his prayer independently, he has to perform sajdah in the final sitting. 18. If a person pronounces salutation after performing the first two rak'ahs of the Zuhr or Asr Fard prayer, on the presumption that he has completed for rak'ahs and realizes his mistake after the salutation, he should stand up to complete the four rak'ahs and carry out sajdah in the final sitting. 19. If a person develops a doubt during his prayer as to whether he has performed three rak'ahs or four, and he does not have such a doubt normally, he should repeat the whole prayer. But if he generally has such doubts, he should take into account the lesser number of rak'ahs (i.e. three) and complete his prayer with sajdah. 20. If a person omits any Sunnat or Mustahabb part in his prayer, he need not perform sajdah sahv e.g. if he omits Thana in the beginning or forgets to recite Tasbih or ruku, or Salat or the supplication after Salat, sajdah is not necessary. 21. If a person has committed a mistake entailing sajdah but completes his prayer without carrying out sajdah, and realizes this after the salutation, he should immediately perform sajdah and repeat Tashahhud, Salat etc. and complete his prayer, provided that he has not yet turned his face away from the direction of the Qibla nor has had any conversation with another person. 22. If a person performs only one sajdah in a rak'ah, he may make it up in a subsequent rak'ah before Tashahhud, in the final sitting, and perform sajdah. If however, he remembers the mistake after Tashahhud, he should perform the missed sajdah immediately and recite Tashahhud, Salat, etc. again and complete the prayer with sajdah as usual. 23. If a person has offered four rak'ahs instead of two rak'ahs during a journey when it is essential to shorten one's prayer, and has observed the first sitting duly, he should carry out sajdah in the final sitting. In this case, his first two rak'ahs will be regarded as Fard and the remaining two as Nafl. Subhaana laahi wa al-hamdu li laahahi wa laa ilaaha ila laahu wa laahu akbaru How perfect Allah is..., All praise is for Allah, There is no Deity besides Allah, Allah is the Greatest Then complete the rest of the prayers like the Maghrib prayers. This completes your two raka'at Salah. The four raka'at of Zuhr, 'Asr and 'Isha are said in an identical manner with the only difference that in the first two Raka'at of Zuhr and 'Asr, Al-Fatihah is said silently while in 'Isha prayer it is recited aloud. If you are performing a three raka'at (like Maghrib) or four raka'at (like Zuhr, 'Asr and 'Isha) Salah stand up after Tashahhud saying ALLAHU AKBAR and recite Al-Fatihah. You must remember that Al-Fatihah is always recited silently in the third and fourth raka'at of every Salah. When you are offering Fard Salah do not recite any additional passage from the Holy Qur'an after Al-Fatihah in the last two raka'at. After the second Sajdah in the fourth raka'at say the Tashahhud, Darud and end with "AS-SALAMU 'ALAIKUM WA-RAHMATUL-LAH" to each side (first right, then left as shown in the above pictures). This marks the end of Salah. The table below gives details of raka'at in each Salah: Name of Salah Period Number of Fard Raka`at 1st two Raka'at, aloud or silent Before Fard After Fard Sunnah or Nafilah Fajr Between Dawn until Sunrise 2 Aloud 2 None Zuhr Between just past noon and mid-afternoon 4 Silent 4 2+2 `Asr Between mid afternoon until before sunset 4 Silent 4 None Maghrib Between just after sunset until dark 3 Aloud None 2+2 `Isha Between dark and shortly before dawn 4 Aloud 4 2+2+3+2 SUNNAH AND NAFILAH OR ADDITIONAL PRAYER As you can see in the chart below, each Salah is composed of (a) Fard, the prescribed prayers, (b) Sunnah and (c) Nafilah or additional prayers. The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) said these additional prayers before or after the prescribed (Fard) prayers. These are therefore recommended. The sequence of these additional prayers in each Salah is given below: Name of Salah Number of Sunnah before Fard Number of Fard Number of Sunnah after Fard Number of Nafilah Fajr 2 2 - - Zuhr 4 4 2 2 `Asr 4 4 - - Maghrib - 3 2 2 `Isha 4 4 2 2+3+2 Aayatul kursi Allah!
